(Non)Thermal Aspects of Charmonium Production and a New Look at J/ψ Suppression
نویسندگان
چکیده
To investigate a recent proposal that J/ψ production in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions is of thermal origin we have reanalyzed the data from the NA38/50 collaboration within a thermal model including charm. Comparison of the calculated with measured yields demonstrates the non-thermal origin of hidden charm production at SPS energy. However, the ratio ψ ′ /(J/ψ) exhibits, in central nucleus-nucleus collisions, thermal features which lead us to a new interpretation of open charm and charmonium production at SPS energy. Implications for RHIC and LHC energy measurements will be discussed.

Charmonium production at forward rapidity at RHIC
One of the key issues in understanding charmonium production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is the discrimination of suppression (due to Debye screening and/or dissociation reactions) vs. regeneration mechanisms (due to recombination of charm and anti-charm quarks). Both mechanisms are believed to be primarily active in the putatively formed Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Since suppressi...
متن کاملCharmonium chemistry in A+A collisions at relativistic energies
Charmonium production and suppression in heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies is investigated within different models, i.e. the comover absorption model, the threshold suppression model, the statistical coalescence model and the HSD transport approach. In HSD the charmonium dissociation cross sections with mesons are described by a simple phase-space parametrization including an effect...
متن کاملStatistical hadronization of charm: from FAIR to the LHC
We discuss the production of charmonium in nuclear collisions within the framework of the statistical hadronization model. We demonstrate that the model reproduces very well the availble data at RHIC. We provide predictions for the LHC energy where, dependently on the charm production cross section, a dramatically different behaviour of charmonium production as a function of centrality might be...
متن کاملEvidence for ψ′ Regeneration in Heavy Ion Collisions
The study of hidden charm production is an important part of the heavy ion program. The standard approach to this problem [1] assumes that cc̄ bound states are created only at the initial stage of the reaction and then partially destroyed at later stages due to interactions with the medium [2, 3, 4]. The idea of the statistical J/ψ production [5] triggered the development of an alternative appro...
متن کاملCharmonium production from the hadronic phase
Charmonium production from the hadron gas formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied. Using the J/ψ-hadron absorption cross section determined from the nonperturbative quark-exchange model, which has a peak value similar to that used in the comover model for J/ψ suppression and a thermally averaged value consistent from that extracted from J/ψ data in heavy-ion collisions, we ...
